Update: Cause of Downtown Rooftop Fire Undetermined

March 9, 2021

The cause of the fire that took place last Thursday at the building on 2nd St. and W. Myrtle St. is undetermined at this time. Accidental causes are suspected and our investigators are working diligently, using several sources, to determine the cause. Our crews did a great job containing the fire quickly.

A building that is under construction has unknown risks. These risks can include: incomplete staircases, open valves, and inability to access the roof through the building. Due to these unknowns, we relied on our ladder trucks to fully extend their ariel ladders in order to reach the roof. Our crews used forced entry to access the roof from inside the building as well.

A total of 7 apartments sustained damage that evening due to fire and water.

“We are proud of our firefighters. They have spent hours training, preparing, and honing their skills to enable them to respond effectively to a difficult fire such as this,” said Deputy Chief of Operations, Brad Bolen

At 6:35 pm Boise Fire responded to a report of smoke and fire coming from a building at S. 2nd Street and W. Myrtle Street. The first engine arrived at 6:40 pm and the fire was quickly upgraded to a working fire and a second alarm response was called. In total seven engines, three truck companies, and 15 units from Boise Fire responded to the scene. Crews were assisted by Boise Police, Ada County Sheriff’s Office, and Ada County Paramedics.

Access to the building was initially difficult as the building was under construction and one of the fire hydrants was not yet in service. Firefighters were able to access the roof on the 8th floor of the building using two ladder trucks. They also ran water lines up the ladder to access the roof. Firefighters were able to get control of the fire by 7:08 pm. There were no injuries reported and the building was unoccupied at the time.

Roads in the area were closed between Front and Myrtle and from Broadway to 9th.  Some closures remain in place while fire crews remain on scene.  An investigation into what caused the fire is underway.
