Starting a Small Business

Opening a small business is a significant investment of financial and personal resources. Small businesses are important to Boise’s financial health. The City of Boise wants to assist you through the regulatory process to ensure your business has a positive impact on the community/neighborhood, is safe to occupy and opens as quickly as possible.

The city has developed a guide that provides an overview of the various regulatory requirements necessary to open your business. Since each business and its proposed location are unique, it is important to note that this is a general overview and there will be variations among projects.

The guide includes information on required zoning approvals and building permits, as well as state and federal resources.

Business Licenses and Occupancy Permits

Opening a business in the City of Boise may require several different types of licenses and permits, depending on the business type.

Required licenses are issued after all construction permits have been finaled and the Certificate of Occupancy has been issued. See the licensing section of the City Clerk's site for a list of required licenses and submittal requirements.
